Online Guest Artists 2023

Alongside our talented Resident Artists, we would like to share the work of those who inspire making and creativity at the Hearth.

Adele Burdon I printmaker

Adele's artistic journey is a testament to the power of following one's passion & finding inspiration in the world around us.

Adele grew up locally and has been using the Hearth print room for many years, firstly creating photo etchings and is now well known for one-of-a-kind monotype prints. She finds the vast beautiful landscapes of Northumberland difficult to confine in a single viewpoint and so she lets them fluidly escape beyond the confines of the printing plate. The layering of textures foraged on walks serve to create the rich surface qualities found within her work.

Adele is recognised as an award-winning contemporary printmaker and in December of this year, she will be exhibiting at the ‘Great Print 9’ exhibition at Rheged in Penrith.

Joanna Bourne I printmaker

Joanna Bourne is an award-winning printmaker from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She teaches printmaking classes at Northern Print and Newcastle Arts Centre, and has exhibited widely, including at Printfest where she won the "Printmakers' printmaker" award in 2014.

It starts with a glimpsed scene that lingers as a feeling, maybe watching a nesting pigeon from the studio window or the crows commanding the cows on a misty moor. This feeling stays at the centre of the process in which the woodcut is created. Layers are planned, wood is selected with an eye on the grain, cutting starts and colours are tested. The planning process can take weeks and aims to find the perfect balance in composition and colour which allows the finished print to express the original feeling.

Jo will be a Guest Artist at the Winter Fair on the weekend of November 18th and 19th, 2023 where she will be showing a range of original woodcuts, cards.
