Hidden Histories: Make Your Own Pocket with Mandy

Inspired by reading Pocket: A Hidden History of Women’s Lives, Mandy decided to try making some pockets herself.

Through her research, she has learned about the fascinating construction and history of these receptacles, which were worn beneath women’s dresses. More than simply practical accessories, pockets became personal spaces where women kept not only their valuables but also their secrets.

During the workshop, Mandy will share some of the stories associated with pockets and their contents, and you may even be inspired to think of something special to put in your own.

While many historical pockets were plain and utilitarian, their fronts often became canvases for patchwork, appliqué, and embroidery. Mandy has chosen not to hide her pockets beneath clothing but to display them as wall hangings, showcasing her textile skills. However, you can make yours into a practical item if you wish, and once you know how, they make wonderful handmade gifts.

Mandy will provide a pattern and all the materials needed to create your pocket. You will then make it unique and personal through your choice of fabrics, colours, and surface decoration.
